AEROBIC: N-Nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) biodegraded slowly in samples of sewage and two lake waters(1). In the lake water samples, NDELA was slowly metabolized in static tubes or flasks incubated at 22°C in the dark(1). The fastest degradation of NDELA in a lake water sample was in one taken in August: NDELA at an initial concentration of 1.0 ug/mL was completely converted to soluble products in 9 days(1). However, no metabolism of NDELA was observed after 32 days incubation at 22°C in a lake water sample taken in January(1). The products from NDELA degradation in lake water were persistent(1). Mineralization of NDELA was never observed in the lake water samples(1). In sewage, NDELA was mineralized, but CO2 formation was not observed until about day 25; after 89 days over 40% of the carbon added as NDELA was recovered as CO2 when the experiment was terminated(1). In sewage, NDELA metabolism products were slowly mineralized with no seasonal differences observed(1).
